Scripture is clear that the people of God exist in part to serve. Ephesians 4:11-13 states "It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Paul gives more clarity to this idea of service as he writes about the different spiritual gifts in Romans 12 and I Corinthians 14. The early church in Acts 4 gives another example of the body of Christ coming together to share everything and give to those in need.
This is an important vision for us to share as we seek to serve not only those within the church, but also those in the world.
Part of serving the world includes sharing the gospel in our Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Jesus asserts this earlier in the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20). As the body of Christ, we fulfill His commands by serving others in our church and reaching out to a lost world.
